La Selva Environmental Fair Oct 2025

Each year, it is a tremendous source of satisfaction for the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) and our La Selva Research Station to welcome hundreds of people from neighboring communities and other regions of our country. On October 19, 2025, it was a day filled with excitement and energy for the staff of the National University and the Organization for Tropical Studies.

A large number of volunteers—who believe in the importance of community impact—support us by warmly welcoming and assisting our visitors. More than 1,600 people gathered with great enthusiasm at La Selva Research Station, where we shared guided walks, educational talks on diverse topics, scientific exhibits, artistic and cultural performances, showcases of local artisan products, and traditional foods.

In 2025, we gave the OTS–UNA Environmental and Cultural Fair a deeper meaning by naming it “Bridge to Knowledge,” as one of its main objectives is to bring people closer to new life experiences through learning. Immersed in the tropical forest, each year we highlight for the Sarapiquí community the importance of our environment, our natural richness, and our local culture.

This October, we saw unprecedented participation from children’s groups as well as a significant number of older adults. It has been invaluable to witness the joy on their faces as they learn and engage—reminding us that learning and enjoyment, regardless of age, always bring something new and spark curiosity.

We would also like to take this opportunity to recognize two essential pillars for the success of the Environmental and Cultural Fair, without whom this meaningful event would not be possible: first, those who work tirelessly and contribute to making the event a reality, strengthening partnerships that help build the foundation for positive change; and second, the members of our communities—our neighbors—who are the very reason for this event and who transform it into a true celebration.

Together, with a shared and consistent commitment, we can continue to achieve goals aimed at preserving our local richness and learning from it.

Message from Elizabeth Braker, OTS President and CEO, and Chelsea Ward, Chair of the OTS Board of Directors (February 2026)
