Message from Elizabeth Braker, OTS President and CEO, and Chelsea Ward, Chair of the OTS Board of Directors (February 2026)

With deep sadness, we mourn the death of Dr. Jay Savage on November 3, 2025. OTS is profoundly grateful for his singular dedication to building the tropical biology community through his leadership and vision linking research, education, collaborative leadership, and mentorship—four pillars of OTS.

Jay Mathers Savage was a pioneering American herpetologist whose scientific work profoundly influenced the study of tropical biodiversity. He dedicated his life to understanding the rich diversity of amphibians and reptiles, especially in Central America and Costa Rica. His monumental works, such as ‘The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica’ and numerous scientific papers, remain cornerstones for researchers and students alike. Through his meticulous documentation, he revealed the biogeographical and ecological complexity of the region, inspiring both scientific inquiry and conservation action.

As one of the founders of the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), Savage played a key role in shaping field-based education programs that trained generations of tropical biologists and conservationists. His commitment to collaborative science and experiential learning helped establish OTS as a global leader in tropical research and education. Many of today’s generation of field herpetologists were part of Jay’s labs at University of Southern California and later at University of Miami, and these scientists have also done fundamental field research at OTS stations.

Over the years, Jay continued to be involved with OTS in several capacities, including writing a personal account of the founding of OTS. Other details, in Jay’s unique story telling style, emerged as part of celebration of OTS’ 50th Anniversary in 2013, when Dr. Julie Denslow recorded a series of interviews with Jay.

Jay’s family has suggested that memorial gifts be directed to OTS, and the OTS Board of Directors has established the Jay Savage Memorial Graduate Research Fund. For more information, see the online giving page.

Stay tuned for an announcement of a Savage Symposium honoring Jay’s scientific contributions and those of his students.

Dr. Jay Savage’s impact endures not only in the annals of science but also in the hearts and minds of all those who share his vision to bring science to the world.

Best regards,
Chelsea and Beth
