News from the board – March 2024

The OTS Board of Directors met in Costa Rica on March 12-16, 2024.  On March 13, we visited urban ecology research and conservation projects in San José, and then met at the Costa Rican Office, leading with remarks by outgoing Chair, George Middendorf. That evening, OTS hosted an event to mark the launch of the new OTS Center for Urban Tropical Studies. Invited guests heard from researchers with active research and outreach programs focused on the importance of understanding the impact of climate change and urban development in the tropics.

The next day, Board members and OTS staff traveled to Las Cruces Research Station and Wilson Botanical Garden. A tour of facilities was led by station staff, with the opportunity to learn about fascinating hummingbird research being carried out by U. Toronto graduate student Ferne Kotlyar and her advisor, Helene Wagner. During the meeting, the Board discussed embarking on our new strategic and business planning process. After an afternoon reception hosted by the San Vito Bird Club, including staff from Osa Conservation and Finca Cantaros, Board members returned to the station and heard an evening presentation by Dr. Rebecca Cole on developing the OTS Tropical Center for Restoration Science based at Las Cruces.

Finally, elections for two open officer positions were held. Chelsea Ward (Auburn University, Montgomery) is the new Chair of the Board of Directors. With Chelsea accepting the role of Chair, the position of secretary of the Board was vacated. I am pleased to be able to fill this role for the OTS Board of Directors.
