Environmental Fair at La Selva-2018

On November 4th, the La Selva Research Station hosted the 12th annual Environmental Fair. This outreach event shares OTS’ on-going research, educational programs, and sustainability efforts with the community through guided walks, workshops, talks and exhibits from sponsors such as the Dole Food Company and FLOREX among others. The Fair is organized by a committed group of staff and volunteers including scientists and researchers.

The day also celebrated the 50th Anniversary of La Selva, considered one of the most important centers in the world for the study of the tropical rain forest. To date more than 4,000 publications of studies carried out on the site have been generated. The Environmental Fair is a unique opportunity for OTS to open its doors to all Sarapiquí and the surrounding communities for an exclusive day to enjoy with family and friends.

This year, we welcomed more than 1,400 people who enjoyed activities combining science, nature and fun all in the same place. People participated on guided tours of the tropical forests learning about the animals and plants that live there.

Thanks to the efforts of the many volunteers, the Environmental Fair was a great blend of education, science, conservation, and fun. Among the most rewarding outcomes were seeing so many local families visit the station for the first time. OTS plans to continue this tradition at the station and we look forward to seeing new and familiar faces here next year!
